I played it for the first five or six months ago. Before that, I somehow despised the series: I remembered playing a bit of LSL7 after
The Beast Within, when I was in search of another Sierra adventure (and they were extremely difficult to find, here in Italy), but it disappointed me so I put that aside. It was only, like I said, five or six months ago that I dug it and played it. I guess that, not being particularly interested in women, invalidated my previous judgment of the games: then, when I finally find the will to play them all I discovered that the first three games are less about the women, and more about Larry search for love (with the satisfying sex intercourse thrown in between as a "diversion" from the main love interest). To this day, LSL3 remains my favorite mainly because of the "switch" you talk about, and because it was the more geared toward sentiment, and because playing as Patti was incredibly fun and the finale - funny and touching at the same time!
